The 5 Most Common SEO Mistakes

Having been in the business of optimizing web sites for high search engine rankings for over five years now, I have come across a number of "optimized" sites that use search engine optimization (SEO) techniques that are just plain WRONG.

Most of these sites were optimized by persons just starting out; SEO beginners not yet familiar enough with the industry to determine SEO fact from SEO fiction. But what's scary is that some of the sites I've seen using incorrect methods have been optimised by so called search engine optimization "experts" who really should know better.

Some common themes develop amongst incorrectly optimized sites. Could YOU be making the same errors with your site? To find out, let's look at the five most common search engine optimization mistakes:

1) Non Utilization of the Title Tag How many times have you looked at a web site where the browser title reads "Welcome to [company name]'s web site" or simply "[Company Name]"? Nothing wrong with that, I hear you say? Well if you want to achieve high search engine rankings, there's PLENTY wrong with it.

You see, while it may not be common knowledge amongst web designers, most search engines index the content of title tags and consider it to be one of the most important factors in their relevancy algorithm. What you place in your title can make or break your ranking for particular search terms on the various engines. If you don't include your most important search phrases within your title tag, you are overlooking a vital opportunity in your quest for higher search rankings.

Having said this, you should try and keep your title tag to a maximum of 200 characters, as that is the average limit most search engines will truncate to. If you really insist on including your company name in your title and you're willing to sacrifice good keyword real estate to do so, put it at the very end of the tag, because search engines give more relevancy "weight" to content at the start of your tag.

2) Use of Untargeted Keywords and Phrases Another common mistake made by webmasters and SEO learners is their choice of keywords placed in the META keyword tag. Sure it might seem logical to target the word "printers" if you run a printer repair business in Ohio, but think about it - even if you succeeded in ranking well for such a competitive term (you won't), how many of the people visiting your site as a result of this search would leave as soon as they saw your home page? That's right, most of them. All the people who wanted to buy printers, all the people looking for businesses outside Ohio, all the people not looking specifically for printer repairers.

Does it become clear now that targeting such a generic word is a waste of time? What you need to do instead is optimize your site for search terms and phrases that are highly targeted to your precise business. Use a tool such as Wordtracker (keyword location software) to find what people are actually typing in to the search engines to find goods and services similar to yours and concentrate on ranking well for those terms. The more qualified your site visitors are, the more likely you are to convert those visitors into paying customers.

3) A Lack of Optimized Body Text This one is very common. How often do you visit a home page that is made up entirely of graphics? You know the ones - they consist of an enormous Flash file or maybe a large logo or a montage of images, but the thing they have in common is a distinct lack of text. Think they look professional? Think again. No matter what you read or hear, if a site has no text on the home page, it hasn't been correctly optimized and has little chance of ranking well in the search engines. Now that's unprofessional in my opinion.

Beginner SEO's often make the mistake of creating an optimized title tag and META tags and believing their work is done. WRONG. If you want a web site to rank well in the search engines, you need to give them what they want to see - visible content that is optimized just as well as the invisible content. That means adding keyword-filled body text to any page you want ranking high. Why? Because most search engines can't index images. Some engines don't even index META tags anymore. So a site with no visible content becomes effectively invisible to a search engine and has almost no chance of appearing in the rankings for logical searches.

Also, search engine algorithms have become smarter and are now checking that sites contain highly relevant content before including them in their index. If you expect to rank well for a particular keyword or phrase, it's not too much to expect to find that keyword or phrase within your site is it?

4) Submitting to 1,000 Search Engines I love this one. I've lost count of how many banner ads or web sites I've seen boasting "We'll submit your site to 1,000 search engines!" I can't believe the hype is still prevalent that you need to submit a web site to thousands of search engines in order to receive traffic. This is just NOT TRUE.

In fact, studies show that approximately 90% of search traffic still comes from the 10 major U.S. search engines and directories (listed here). Companies that advertise submission to thousands of search engines are usually including in that list minor engines or directories that utilize the databases of major engines anyway (so don't require submission) or a large number of Free For All (FFA) sites. Submitting your site to FFA pages can damage your site's reputation in the search engines, because they consider FFA sites to be of very low quality and utilizing spamdexing techniques in an attempt to falsely inflate a site's link popularity. I've even seen examples of sites being banned from a search engine for having their pages listed on FFA sites by ill-informed webmasters without the site owner's knowledge.

If you are targeting specific geographic markets, you might like to submit your site to the most popular regional search engines in those countries, but the fact is that most people worldwide continue to use the U.S. versions of search engines such as Yahoo and AltaVista despite the fact that there are local versions available. The bottom line? Get your site listed on the 10 most popular search engines and directories and you will have the major worldwide traffic sources covered.

5) Resubmitting Too Soon and Too Often So you've optimized your site and submitted it to the most important search engines. But it's been three weeks and you haven't received any traffic. Time to resubmit, right? WRONG. Depending on the search engine, they can take up to twelve weeks to include your site in their index. Each search engine and directory work to their own time frame. You need to check their average submission times (a chart is here) and be patient.

So when you're in, what then? You should regularly submit to ensure you're ranked above your competitors, maybe once a month or once a week, right? WRONG AGAIN. Once you're in a search engine's database, there is no need to resubmit your site. It's pointless actually, because they already know about your site and their robot is scheduled to revisit and reindex all sites in the database on a regular basis. Resubmitting wastes everybody's time and can actually get your URL permanently banned from a search engine for "spamdexing".

The only time you need to resubmit your site to a search engine is if your URL changes or if your domain suddenly drops out of their database entirely. NOT if your ranking drops, NOT if your content changes, but if the domain is actually nowhere to be found in the index (this can happen from time to time as the search engines Spring clean their databases). A good SEO will monitor your rankings regularly (monthly is fine) and only resubmit when absolutely necessary.

So those are the five most common SEO mistakes. Any sound familiar? Don't worry, you're in good company. Now that you've recognised the problem areas and are better equipped with the correct information, you'll be able to reverse the damage.

What is cloaking?

The term "cloaking" is used to describe a website that returns altered webpages to search engines crawling the site. In other words, the webserver is programmed to return different content to Google than it returns to regular users, usually in an attempt to distort search engine rankings. This can mislead users about what they'll find when they click on a search result. To preserve the accuracy and quality of our search results, Google may permanently ban from our index any sites or site authors that engage in cloaking to distort their search rankings.

Do I need to submit updated and/or outdated links and pages to Google?

Google updates its index frequently, so there's no need to submit updated or outdated links. We should pick up any changes to your site during our next crawl.

How do I submit multiple pages?

Please visit our Add URL page to input your URLs. There's no need to submit each individual page; the domain's top-level page will suffice. Our crawler, Googlebot, will find the rest.

Why doesn't Google index any of my pages?

If your pages haven't been indexed yet, it's probably because there aren't enough other pages on the web that link to them. Google looks at the link interconnectedness among pages, relying on the vastness and openness of the Internet to yield the most relevant search results. If other pages don't link to yours, we can't assign your pages a PageRank (our proprietary measure of a page's importance) in a reasonable way. Once other pages point to them, we'll pick your pages up.

How long does the Google robot take to index a URL once it's been submitted?

Depending on the timing of the submission and of our crawl, the entire process can take between six and eight weeks.

Where is my page's title?

Unlike many search engines, Googlebot can return results for pages that are known but haven't been crawled yet. Since we haven't looked at those pages yet, their titles aren't shown; the Google results page displays the URL instead.

How should I request that Google not return cached material from my site?

Google stores many web pages in its cache to retrieve for users as a back-up in case the server where the page resides temporarily fails. Users can view the cached version by choosing the "Cached" link on the search results page. If you don't want your content to be accessible through Google's cache, use a tag with a CONTENT="NOARCHIVE" attribute. To do so, place the following line in the section of your documents:

This tag tells robots not to archive the page. Google will continue to index and follow links from the page, but will not present cached material to users. If you want to allow other robots to cache your content, but prevent Google's robots from doing so, use the following tag:

Please note that the change will take effect the next time Google crawls the page containing the NOARCHIVE directive in a tag. If you want this change to take effect sooner, the site owner must contact us and request immediate removal of archived content. Note also that the NOARCHIVE directive only controls whether a cached version of the page is made available. To control whether the page is indexed, use CONTENT="NOINDEX". To control whether links are followed, use CONTENT="NOFOLLOW". For more information, see the Robots Exclusion page.

Googlebot Technology Questions

How should I request that Google not crawl part or all of my site?

The standard for robot exclusion given at http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/norobots.html provides for a file called robots.txt that you can put on your server to exclude Googlebot and other web crawlers. (Googlebot has a user-agent of "Googlebot".)

Googlebot also understands some extensions to the robots.txt standard. Disallow patterns may include * to match any sequence of characters, and patterns may end in $ to indicate the end of a name. For example, to prevent Googlebot from crawling files that end in .gif, you may use the following robots.txt entry:

User-Agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /*.gif$
Please note that Googlebot does not interpret a 401/403 response ("Unauthorized"/"Forbidden") to a robots-txt fetch as a request not to crawl any pages on the site. To prevent Googlebot and other web crawlers from crawling any page on your site, you may use the following robots.txt entry:

User-Agent: *
Disallow: /
Please note also that each port must have its own robots.txt file. In particular, if you serve content via both http and https, you'll need a separate robots.txt file for each of these protocols. For example, if you wanted to allow all filetypes to be served via http but only .html pages to be served via https, the robots.txt file for the http protocol (http://yourserver.com/robots.txt) would be:

User-Agent: *
Allow: /
The robots.txt file for the https protocol (https://yourserver.com/robots.txt) would be:

User-Agent: *
Disallow: /
Allow: /*.html$
Another standard which is more convenient for page-by-page use involves adding a meta tag to an HTML page to tell robots not to index the page or not to follow the links it contains. This standard is described at http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/exclusion.html. You may also want to read what the HTML standard has to say about these tags. Remember that changing your server's robots.txt file or changing the tags on its pages will not cause an immediate change in the results that Google returns, since your changes must propagate to Google's next index of the web before being reflected in Google search results.

Why is Googlebot asking for a file called robots.txt that isn't on my server?

robots.txt is a standard document that can tell Googlebot not to download some or all information from your web server. For information on how to create a robots.txt file, see The Robot Exclusion Standard.

Why is Googlebot trying to download incorrect links from my server? Or from a server that doesn't exist?

It's a fact of life on the web that many links will be broken or outdated at any given time. Whenever someone publishes an incorrect link that points to your site (perhaps through a typo or a spelling error) or fails to update their pages to reflect changes on your server, Googlebot will try to download an incorrect link from your site. This is also why you may get hits on a machine that isn't a web server at all.

Why is Googlebot downloading information from our "secret" web server?

It is almost impossible to keep a web server secret by not publishing any links to it. As soon as someone follows a link from your "secret" server to another web server, it is likely that your "secret" URL is in the referer tag, and it can be stored and possibly published by the other web server in its referer log. So, if there is a link to your "secret" web server or page on the web anywhere, it is likely that Googlebot and other "web crawlers" will find it.

Why isn't Googlebot obeying my robots.txt file?

To save bandwidth, Googlebot only downloads the robots.txt file once a day or whenever we have fetched many pages from the server. So, it may take a while for Googlebot to learn of any changes that might have been made to your robots.txt file. Also, Googlebot is distributed on several machines. Each of these keeps its own record of your robots.txt file. Also, check that your syntax is correct against the standard at: http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/norobots.html. If there still seems to be a problem, please let us know and we'll correct it.

Please note that there is a small difference between the way Googlebot handles the robots.txt file and the way the robots.txt standard says we should (keeping in mind the distinction between "should" and "must"). The standard says we should obey the first applicable rule, whereas Googlebot obeys the longest (that is, the most specific) applicable rule. This more intuitive practice matches what people actually do, and what they expect us to do. For example, consider the following robots.txt file:

User-Agent: *
Allow: /
Disallow: /cgi-bin
It's obvious that the webmaster's intent here is to allow robots to crawl everything except the /cgi-bin directory. Consequently, that's what we do.

How do I register my site with Googlebot so it will be indexed?

Please visit the Add URL form.

How do I remove a site from Google?

Google updates its entire index automatically on a regular basis. When we crawl the web, we find new pages, discard dead links, and update links automatically. Links that are outdated now will most likely "fade out" of our index during our next crawl.

Help! Googlebot is crawling my site too fast. What can I do?

Please send an email to googlebot@google.com with the name of your site and a detailed description of the problem. Please also include a portion of the weblog that shows Google accesses, so we can track down the problem more quickly on our end.

Why are there hits from multiple machines at Google.com, all with user-agent Googlebot?

Googlebot was designed to be distributed on several machines to improve performance and to scale as the web grows.

Can you tell me the IP addresses from which Googlebot crawls so that I can filter my logs?

The IP addresses used by Googlebot change from time to time. The best way to identify accesses by Googlebot is to use the user-agent (Googlebot).

How do I block all crawlers except Googlebot from my site?

The following robots.txt file will achieve this for all well-behaved crawlers.

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

User-agent: Googlebot
Allow: /
How do I tell Googlebot not to crawl dynamically generated pages on my site?

The following robots.txt file will achieve this.

User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /*?

Do It Yourself SEO

You can do it yourself - if you have loads of time

It is not hard to be barking up the wrong tree when it comes to getting search engine traffic because there is so much out of date information being circulated.

Not only is there out of date or invalid SEO advice getting around, there is also information which if acted upon, can result in your pages being banned.

The SEO tips below should assist the reader in forming a basic understanding of how to create human friendly web pages which are easily understood by the most popular search engines.

Know this. There are thousands of search engines but only two of them will bring you most of the traffic. They are google and yahoo. Another search engine that brings me a little traffic is msn but I do not focus too much on tactics for that engine.

Focus your attention on the engines that will bring you the most visitors first and work your way down.

Basic SEO

1. Insert keywords within the title tag so that search engine robots will know what your page is about. The title tag is located right at the top of your document within the head tags. Inserting
a keyword or key phrase will greatly improve your chances of bringing targeted traffic to your site.

Make sure that the title tag contains text which a human can relate to. The text within the title tag is what shows up in a search result. Treat it like a headline.

2. Use the same keywords as anchor text to link to the page from different pages on your site. This is especially useful if your site contains many pages. The more keywords that link to a specific
page the better.

3. Make sure that the text within the title tag is also within the body of the page. It is unwise to have keywords in the title tag which are not contained within the body of the page.

Adding the exact same text for your h1 tag will tell the reader who clicks on your page from a search engine result that they have clicked on the correct link and have arrived at the page where they intended to visit. Robots like this too because now there is a relation between the title of
your page and the headline.

Also, sprinkle your keywords throughout your article. The most important keywords can be bolded or colored in red. A good place to do this is once or twice in the body at the top of your article and in the sub-headings.

4. Do not use the exact same title tag on every page on your website. Search engine robots might determine that all your pages are the same if all your title tags are the same. If this
happens, your pages might not get indexed.

I always use the headline of my pages as the title tag to help the robots know exactly what my page is about. A good place to insert the headline is within the h1 tag. So the headline is the same as the title tag text.

5. Do not spam the description or keyword meta tag by stuffing meaningless keywords or even spend too much time on this tag. SEO pros all agree that these tags are not as important today as they once were. I just place my headline once within the keywords and description tags.

6. Do not link to link-farms or other search engine unfriendly neighborhoods. A good rule of thumb is if your pages do not contain any words that reflect the content of the site you are linking
to, do not link to it.

7. Do not use doorway pages. Doorway pages are designed for robots only, not humans. Search engines like to index human friendly pages which contain content which is relevant to the search.

8. Title tags for text links. Insert the title tag within the HTML of your text link to add weight to the link and the page where the link resides. This is like the alt tag for images.

9. Describe your images with the use of the alt tag. This will help search engines that index images to find your pages and will also help readers who use text only web browsers.

10. Submit to the search engines yourself. Do not use a submission service or submission software. Doing so could get your site penalized or even banned.

Here is the submission page for google: http://www.google.com/addurl.html

Submit only once. There is no need to submit every two weeks. There is no need to submit more that one page. Robots follow links. If your site has a nice link trail, your entire site will get indexed.

Hope this helped

welcome

Recently, Microsoft officially launched their highly anticipated 'new' search engine to the general public. It can be found here at: http://search.msn.com/.

Although most of the search engine optimization (SEO) guidelines presented here may be similar to other engine requirements and may not come as a surprise to most online marketing professionals, it's important to note some of the subtle differences in SEO requirements unique to MSNBot as the engine strives to have its own identity.

Buried within the help files of the site, there are several wonderful clues to assist web site owners, web site marketing and promotion firms and search engine optimization (SEO) professionals in gaining visibility within MSN search, for themselves or for their clients.

It's quite refreshing to note that Microsoft has documented recognition of the importance of a well designed and optimized site. They even went so far as to state that, if you want a better chance of being indexed properly within this engine, then perhaps you should look into hiring a reputable SEO firm to assist you.

This makes complete sense from MSN's point of view. A professionally optimized site will allow their aptly named spider, MSNbot, to easily read, navigate through and thus relevantly index the web site properly. By optimizing your web site in accordance with MSN's guidelines, you stand a much better chance of being found when it counts the most - when someone is searching for your goods and services.

Here are a few guidelines suggested by MSN to help you out. First and foremost, MSN readily admits that MSNbot will actively be using Meta tags for part of its web site analysis. Yes, meta tags are still relevant pieces of code (despite all the nay sayers out there), and with this new Bot they seem to play a very important role within the indexing algorithm. Similar to other search engines, the 'title tag' again appears to be the most heavily weighted within the algorithm, followed closely by the Meta Description Tag and if you read between the lines, it is suggested that your best 'keywords' should be included in both places. MSN does not come straight out and say that the "keywords meta tag" will be utilized, but by reading between the guidelines it strongly suggests the keywords in all areas (title, description and keyword tag and content) should adhere to each other.

Content of course is still king when it comes to MSNbot's ability to put the entire puzzle together. Apparently, at this stage, the Bot does not read text within a graphic, so if you have important keywords contained within a graphic (especially on your main page), they strongly suggest you move those keywords into plain old text format. And here's a tip; the closer to the top of the page, the better.

MSN Search calls for pages to be under 150K in size, suggesting the Bot will either simply stop reading after this point or in a worse case scenario, may measure/weigh the page size before reading and simply skip the page all together. This point is not made entirely clear, but it should be of enough concern to have every SEO firm scampering to measure their clients web site's index pages, just in case. In actuality, a page size of 150k could contain a lot of relevant text content, but add a few fancy graphics in there and the total can add up quickly.

An interesting point within the guidelines suggests that words (even keywords) within headers, footers and tables will not be read. Again, simple text is the rule of thumb. This may cause some web sites to need a complete redesign. Graphics with long or non-content supported ALT tags will also be dismissed. This is very similar to the rules from other major search engines, as it provides somewhat of a safeguard against sites that stuff keywords in an attempt to fool or "spam" the engines into thinking they are something they are not. Redirects will not be read either.

Linking, as per usual, will be an important part of MSNBot's equation. They offer two suggestions as to which links will be deemed the most important: links from the main page and links no more than three levels deep. This means all hyperlinks on your site should be accessible within three clicks or less from each other for maximum effectiveness. Very interesting. Larger web sites may have a problem adhering to this rule, but it should be kept in mind that the MSNBot is still feeling its way through the web. A three deep scenario is probably the beginning of the parameter. It will surely offer a deeper crawl as it becomes more sophisticated.

Submitting Your Site.
Good news! Submission to MSN Search is offered freely by Microsoft but two rules must be followed. First, search to see if your web site is already contained within their database. There is no need to resubmit if they already have you indexed. Second, the submission procedure is manual and is not accepting automated submissions at this time. Therefore you must enter a presented code into the appropriate field along with your URL before being allowed to submit (http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx).

According to MSN Search online documentation, some sites may have been deleted from the old index. Web site owners, SEO firms and other online marketing professionals take note: It would be time well spent to double-check your inclusion status or run through your entire client roster to ensure each client is contained within the MSN Search database. They may have been ranking high in there before but completely absent now. Resubmit where necessary.

This engine is already a major player and if the search industry rumors are true, MSN Search will be taking on the Google and Yahoo!'s of the world for dominance within the marketplace.

By following a few simple guidelines and MSN specific SEO procedures, your web site will be showing up with the best of them.

Hope this helped you.
